Broadband to reach 100Mbps next year?

A Finnish company has predicted a future of 100Mbps broadband into the home. The company, Teleste, says these speeds may become available as early as next year over existing cable TV connections.

Currently broadband speeds in the UK are typically 2Mbit although some companies such as Bulldog are offering an 8Mbit service. However, this means that cable could soon be offer connections speeds of between 12 and 50 times the current bandwidth.

Teleste says the future demand for video over broadband would be driving the take up of the high speed services. Teleste's Pekka Rissanen told an audience, 'Based on our research 30 Megabits per second is the absolute minimum in future homes. Just one TV program would take 10-20 Megabits per second of this alone. So, very fast we would reach a need for 30 Megabits, and also for 50 Megabits per second,'

The company is planning to introduce its Ethernet to the Home product to the market next year that will deliver the 100Mbs speeds. Currently the company is running a pilot service with Dutch TV service provider Essent.
