Internet sees new Web revival

The Web is back, according to Internet monitoring company Netcraft.
In its study of numbers of websites online during the last six months, it has noted phenomenal growth 'approaching the torrid growth rate of 2000'.
From May to June Netcraft counted nearly 65 million active sites, an increase of 1.27 million over the period April to May. And for the first six months of the year, the number of new sites tallied 7.83 million.
This compares well with 2000's 16.8 million new domains for the year. Between 2003 and 2004 the growth rate remained relatively sober, rising from 10.4 million to 10.9 million.
Apache remains the web server platform of choice, just shy of 70 per cent. Microsoft's Windows accounts for slightly over 20 per cent.
However, things look rosier at Redmond on other counts. Netcraft's survey of the Most Reliable Hosting Company Site during May showed that half of the top ten companies were using the Windows platform - either Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003. Top of the pile though was Hostway, which hosts sites on Linux.
For the full results see the Netcraft website.
