LinuxUser & Developer Expo: Broadband for Linux users

uklinux.net has launched ADSL for those of the Linux persuasion. What makes this broadband service different to any other broadband, for Windows users for example? The people behind it, uklinux.net, will help with the installation and configuration of broadband specifically for Linux and Open Source systems.

The idea is to smooth the path of those who may be intimidated by setting up an ADSL connection on systems based on Free Software. No discrimination is made on the basis of the distro involved - Red Hat, SuSE, debian, etc

Based on the regular BT Wholesale IPStream product, the pricing info is as follows. There's a setup cost of £55 and the uklinux Home 500 service costs £22.95 per month. There is no minimum contract - you can give a month's notice - and there is no modem as part of the package. The company will soon be supplying Ethernet modems, however, a company spokesperson told us. A uklinux Office 1000 package, for businesses, costs £55 per month.

The contention ratio for the Home 500 package, which provides 500Kbit/sec downstream and 250Kbit/sec upstream, is 50:1. For the Office 1000 package, which provides 1Mbit/sec downstream and 250Kbit/sec upstream, there is a maximum contention ration of 1:20.

The LinuxUser & Developer Expo is being co-hosted with the Networks for Business 2003 show at the NEC in Birmingham.
