The National Statistics Office has released the latest figures for UK Internet connectivity, covering the month of April 2003.
And it's pretty much as you were, in terms of trends we have identified before. Traditional modem dial-up access slowly declines while the 'permanent' connections of always-on broadband continue their steady climb.
With a 0.7 per cent decrease on March, dial-up access to the Net fell by 5.6 per cent over the last year. Permanent connections, however, now form 15 per cent of subscriptions to the Internet, up from 14.4 per cent in March. Year-on-year this represents an increase of 203.2 per cent for broadband 'subscriptions', which is the statisticians terms for Net access.
The only other thing of note this month is that, overall, there has been a very slight fall in Net access. While there has been a yearly increase of 4.8 per cent since April 2002, there has been a fall of 0.1 per cent since the previous month of March 2003.
The National Statistics Office suggests this may be a seasonal effect, but the monitoring body has also modified its indices to track ISP market changes. So that probably accounts for that. No real need to worry the Internet has gone and lost its popularity.
