A BT outage has blocked some users from accessing certain webpages.

The outage was acknowledged by the ISP just before 1pm, with a message on its site saying it would take about two hours to fix.

"We are investigating an issue at the moment that is preventing some customers from accessing webpages," BT said on its business broadband status page. "We are working hard to fix the problem and we will update this message when more information is available. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused."

PC Pro readers reported they couldn't access sites such as LogMeIn, while others reported trouble over Twitter. LogMeIn's Twitter feed said the fault lay with ISPs, but service seemed to be mostly restored, and others suggested it was likely a routing or DNS problem.

Be Broadband noted on its own status pages that there was a DNS issue affecting its network.

As one Twitter user put it: "When DNS is trending on Twitter then that means the internet has broken."

We've asked BT for more information on the cause of the outage and when it's likely to be fixed, and will update this story when we hear back.

Not DNS

It wasn't DNS as I was able to resolve "secure.logmein.com" (actually it redirects to secure.logmein.com.akadns.net). A tracert failed at a BT server (t2as1-tge1-4.uk-lon1.eu.bt.net). Reports on Twitter suggested there was a problem with BT's "Transparant Proxy". Thinking about it now, I wonder if it was HTTPS that was the problem as I was able to go to HTTP sites - Logmein was the only HTTPS I tried... Anyone else try any HTTPS sites?

def not DNS

was a routing issue and confirmed by BTnet call last evening and traceroutes. Still showing several international route problems this morning. I can't believe this hasnt picked up by more of the press, its a big outage and still ongoing.
