UK languishing in high-speed broadband league

The UK is lagging behind other major European nations when it comes to access to high-speed broadband lines.
Only one in ten British internet connections had a headline speed of 8Mbits/sec or greater at the end of 2008, according to Ofcom's annual International Communications Market report.
That leaves Britain languishing behind France, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands, according to Ofcom's research, which covers nine European states.
The Netherlands is particularly well catered for, with 37% of its connections exceeding 8Mbits/sec, with Sweden close behind on 33%. Just over a quarter of the connections in France soar above 8Mbits/sec, with 16% of German broadband users enjoying 8Mbits/sec or more.
On the plus side, we don't pay as much for broadband as our better equipped European rivals. The average revenue per broadband line is £29 in the UK, compared to £36 in France and £33 in Germany. The poor Italians, who have fewer high speed connections than we do, pay a staggering £41 per connection, on average.

Oh please...
Did a child write this article? The fourth paragraph is an insult to the English language! Not to mention the fact the data is 12 months out of date. If you can't write anything good, don't write anything at all.

Hear hear!
Storm311 is exactly right; the headline is misleading and sensationalist with no justification, the article is poorly written; how does rubbish like this get into a reputable magazine like PcPro?

Mmmm....
Ok, I really have not researched the data but I am a Spaniard and I know for a fact that broadband is far more expensive in Spain and consequently bb usage is less widespread. There's more users in the UK and this is going to be reflected in the speed that can be achieved.
I'd rather have a slightlier slower service which can be afforded by more people than in my own country, where it is still seen as a "luxury" because of the price.

Actually...
@storm311 Just been to the BBC website and saw the same figures. Went to Ofcom via BBC and saw that the data is up to date. On Ofcom's website it says "From 2008, Ofcom will publish a full International Communications Market report (ICMR) every other year..." Research helps...

Erm, what?
Did you actually read the arcticle? I'm not questioning its validity in 2008, but the end of 2008 is now ~12 months ago.

Charming
Storm311 & pike_by_nature, do you often talk to perfect strangers like that?

BROADBAND DOWNLOAD SPEEDS
With the fifth or sixth largest economy in the world, these figures should be a source of shame to the United Kingdom. I thought that we were a First-World nation, not an outpost of the Third World!
By Hedgehog253 on 17 Dec 2009 ![]()
Well it's not too bad really - 8 years from now 90% of the whole UK population will have access to at least 2Mb/s and everyone in the country will have only had to pay £42 for it (including the 10% who won't get it but you can't have everything)! Oh.
This story may paint a bleak picture now but by the end of 2017 there will be likely be plenty of "developing" countries ahead of us. In fact there may be other planets in the solar system ahead of us.

storm 311 .
OH PLEASE... lets all hear something intresting from you ...............!
By greentea on 17 Dec 2009 ![]()
@Stonedecroze Not unless they present me with garbage like that found within this article.
@greentea I do not profess to know anything of interest to any of you and THAT is why I don't write articles for pcpro.co.uk. If this website wants to keep its headlines in Google's official Technology news feed, I would suggest it monitors what comes out of it more closely.

its what happens when you privitise a company like BT....and then you sell it off to the Chineese....hmmm are they really interested in us having better systems then themselves?
it doesnt help though that Virgin are not even cabling all new homes which are build in cable areas....i recently purchased a brand new apartment in a major UK town, the whole surrounding area is cabled but Virgin never installed the lines when the new street was build..
seems like madness, how much more money will it cost in future to cable the street, dig up the entire road, drill holes through external walls etc when it could all so easily have been done at build stage....madness

The word you want is rubbish
Rather than the Americanism, garbage.
You should do what most civilised people do when they see something they don't like, ignore it.

Error on the stats
@Barry Collins
Just wanted to point out that Ofcom's data showed that our b/band is actually cheaper - you have used the 2003 data
Go to pg.121 of the ofcom report and you will see that the av cost per connection is £16 in 2008, as opposed to £29 in 2003 - likewise Italy's av cost per connection has fallen from £41 to £23.

Tabloid Headlines...again
When PC Pro launched it was a breath of fresh air. Over time it's gone from being, for me, the IT equal of 'The Times' to the IT version of 'The Soaraway Sun!'. If it wasn't for the likes of Jon Honeyball and Davy Winder (whose last blog post was over 4 months ago) I'd not bother.
