Chiltern Railways texts tickets 12:51PM, Tuesday 24th October 2006
Chiltern Railways is poised to become the first UK train operator to send digital rail tickets to mobile phones.

The mobile ticketing technology sends a bar code to the passenger's mobile phone via SMS. The bar code is then scanned at the ticket gates.

A public, three-month trial will begin towards the end of this year, ahead of a permanent rollout. The trial will only cover Eday tickets for journeys between London and Birmingham.

Chiltern plans to enable ticket purchases phones will be possible at a later stage.

'We have listened to our passengers and what they want is a simpler and easier way to purchase tickets for their travel,' said Neil Micklethwaite, Chiltern Railways's commercial director. 'Mobile ticketing will mean easy purchases, anywhere, any time.'
