Firefox 2.0 Release Candidate 3 available

Posted on 18 Oct 2006 at 10:51

Firefox 2.0 beta testers are getting their final chance to kick the tyres of the beta version of the open source browser. Mozilla, the organisation behind Firefox, has made Release Candidate 3 available for testing. It is expected that this will be the final beta release before the product is officially released.

Mozilla says that users should expect most, but not all of their extensions, plugins and themes from previous versions of Firefox, to work properly. Any glitches should be reported.

The new version will contain an updated user interface, a resume feature following a crash, built in phishing protection; support for JavaScript 1.7 and improvements to the tabbed browsing function that will allow users to re-open recent tabs.

The development team is already turning its attention to Firefox 3.0. Mozilla says that it is now in the early planning stages and has opened a wiki so that people can add their own ideas as to what should be in the next version of Firefox. The plan is for version 3.0 to hit the FTP servers late next year.

Firefox users can download and test RC3 at the release candidate download site. It is available for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux in more than 35 languages.
