BitTorrent aims to speed streams

The torrent of bits delivered by BitTorrent may be arriving even faster. CacheLogic and BitTorrent have announced a partnership that will see the well-known 'peer-assisted digital content delivery platform' work with CacheLogic on new techniques to speed download times.

The two companies intend to collaborate on the development of the open-source Cache Discovery Protocol (CDP). This is a protocol that ISPs can use to lighten the load of BitTorrent traffic, which is an increasingly sensitive issue with Net Neutrality in the news (along with the delayed delivery of Internets because the tubes are blocked)...

Essentially, CDP will enable BitTorrent clients to make the most of any caching devices within an ISP's network, potentially accelerating the delivery of content.

'Today, people use the Internet for many bandwidth-intensive services and consumers are increasingly aware of the quality of service needed for their favourite applications,' said Ashwin Navin, President and Co-founder of BitTorrent. 'With the popularity of BitTorrent usage worldwide, ISP networks are being taxed in a way they weren't designed for. As a remedy to this, the Cache Discovery Protocol is providing carriers with an economical and scalable solution that improves the end-user experience.'

'CacheLogic has developed an innovative solution to address a major problem,' he added.
