Apple intros 17in education iMac 3:14PM, Wednesday 5th July 2006
Apple has introduced a new version of the 17in iMac designed specifically for education customers.

Priced at $400 less (UK pricing to follow) than the cheapest retail mode, the education iMac boasts a 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo processor with a 1,440x900 widescreen LCD display and a built-in iSight video camera. It includes Apple's iLife '06 suite of digital lifestyle applications for editing movies, creating DVDs, managing images, creating music, recording podcasts,

building websites and publishing blogs.

The iMac replaces the eMac, Apple's last CRT-based computer which was phased out last year (and also fell foul of new EU restrictions on the use of hazardous materials).

The iMac for education includes a Combo drive for burning CDs and reading DVDs, 512MB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory, expandable up to 2GB, and a 80GB Serial ATA hard drive running at 7200 rpm. Networking via 10/100/1000 BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet and AirPort Extreme 802.11g WiFi is built-in and there are five USB ports (three USB 2.0) and two FireWire 400 ports.
