The chips, which were formerly announced in May are part of the company's fightback against the AMD Opteron processor, which has been steadily eating at Intel's share of the x86 server market where it previously held a near monopoly position.
Intel says the 5100 series is 'drop-in compatible' as part of the company's 'Bensley' platform and includes the new FB-DIMMs memory technology, Intel's Virtualization Technology, Active Server Manager and I/O Acceleration Technology.
The 5100 range will top out at frequencies of 3.0GHz and a 1.3GHz front side bus and 4Mb of shared L2 cache between both cores. The 3 GHz version will ship with a thermal design point (TDP) of 80 watts with all others rated at just 65W. An even lower voltage version will ship in the third quarter at 2.33 GHz and with a TDP of just 40 watts.
The new chips will be built using a 65nm process. Last week Intel opened its latest 65nm manufacturing facility in Leixlip, Ireland
Prices for the new Xeon 5100 processors range from $209 to $851, based on 1,000-unit quantities.
