MySpace under legal fire over assault 12:19PM, Tuesday 20th June 2006
The mother of a 14-year-old Texas girl is suing MySpace for $30mn after the girl was assaulted by a man she met through the popular social networking website.

The lawsuit claims that the site does not require users to verify their age and says that the security measures aimed at preventing strangers from contacting users younger than 16 are 'utterly ineffective'.

'MySpace is more concerned about making money than protecting children online,' lawyer Adam Loewy, who is representing the girl and her mother, told the Austin American-Statesman.

MySpace said it takes aggressive approach to ensuring users' safety.

'No one is more committed to Internet safety than MySpace,' chief security officer Hemanshu Nigam said in a statement. 'We take aggressive measures to protect our members. Ultimately, Internet safety is a shared responsibility. We encourage everyone on the Internet to engage in smart Web practices and have open family dialogue about how to apply offline lessons in the online world.'

Just three months ago MySpace was forced to defend its security practices after two man were arrested in the US to face charges of sexually abusing children they contacted through the site.
