iTunes set to overtake Real Player
4:07PM, Thursday 16th March 2006
Apple's iTunes software will overtake Real Player later this year to become the second most widely used media software after Windows Media Player (WMP).
Nielsen//NetRatings reports that based on current trends iTunes will have just under 30 million unique users by the middle of 2006, compared to the 80 million who use the Microsoft player.
Currently iTunes has just 18.5mn users, some 10 million fewer than RealPlayer, whose usage has risen only slightly over the past three years. iTunes usage rose more than threefold in 2005 alone.
Although it is not yet as widely used as other players, iTunes is used for longer. The average iTunes usage time per person is 111 minutes compared to just 46 minutes for RealPlayer and WMP.
