Mac minis get the Intel treatment 11:10AM, Wednesday 1st March 2006
Apple has taken a further step towards the completion of its transition to Intel processors by introducing new Mac minis, at the same time discontinuing their PowerPC-based predecessors.

The mini range now comprises one running on a 1.5GHz Intel Core Solo chip and one running on a 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo. Both have 2MB of L2 cache and a 667MHz frontside bus supporting memory totalling 512MB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM, which can be increased to a maximum of 2GB.

The faster machine has an 80GB hard drive and double-layer SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVDRW/CD-RW) while the 1.5GHz machine has a 60GB HDD and a Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW).

include AirPort Extreme (802.11g up to 54Mbps) wireless networking, Bluetooth 2.0, and Intel GMA950 graphics processor with 64MB of RAM, Gigabit Ethernet, four USB 2 ports, one FireWire 400 port and optical digital and analog audio in/out.

'With the new Mac mini, Apple has now moved 50 per cent of its entire product line to Intel within 60 days - a record transition,' said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. 'The new Mac mini is now up to four times faster with the Intel Core Duo, includes even greater expansion in the same incredibly compact design.'

The new minis include Apple's Front Row media software with remote control and its iLife '06 software suite, for managing, editing and printing digital images, editing video, making music, creating websites and creating DVDs.

The Mac mini costs £449 for the Core Solo or £599 for the Core Duo. For more information go to www.apple.com/uk/macmini.
