Denial of service attacker jailed

A young Spaniard has today been jailed for two years for his part in a distributed denial of service attack that overloaded Internet connections for more than 3 million Spanish computer users.

Santiago Garrido, 23, also faces a fine of €1.4 million.

Garrido's campaign began in retaliation to being chucked out of the 'Hispano' IRC chat service for contravening its policies. Using a worm to infect computers, he was then able to gain access to the network to subsequently launch the DDOS, which disrupted service for millions of subscribers to Wanadoo, ONO, Lleida Net and others of Spain's ISPs.

The attack occurred in 2003.
