US spammer faces five years in prison

Posted on 1 Feb 2006 at 16:09

A computer expert who set up and managed the spam systems of notorious US spammers pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting the sending of spam containing graphic pornographic images and faces a prison term of up to five years.

Californian Kirk Rogers, 42, pleaded guilty at a Phoenix court in Arizona to one charge brought under the CAN-SPAM Act.

Rogers also agreed to forfeit money obtained through the operation.

Millions of spam emails were sent from Rogers' IT system, which had been enlisted by Jeffrey A. Kilbride, of Venice, California, and James R. Schaffer of Paradise Valley, Arizona to spam out their campaigns.

AOL claimed to have received in excess of 600,000 complaints from their customers about this spam in the first half of 2004.

Kilbride and Schaffer's trial is scheduled to begin on 2 May 2006.
