What's NXT for Microsoft?

Posted on 12 Jan 2006 at 10:38

Microsoft is opening a new campaign to win over wavering software developers to Windows. The new initiative known as NXT is targeted at ISVs with software solutions turning over $5 million in revenue who are ready to migrate to, or work cross-platform with, a Microsoft operating system or database.

The initiative is aimed principally at applications developers for the Unix and Linux platforms who are the main competitors to Windows Server and its accompanying back office technologies.

However, while Linux gets a lot of press, the big target for Microsoft is the Unix corporate heartland. Although one might think that software developers are probably quite aware of the benefits of migrating to Windows Server, Microsoft feels the need to point out that, according to IDC, in 2004 Windows generated $91 billion worth of software revenues compared to $53 billion for Unix and $4 billion for Linux.

As part of the NXT initiative, Microsoft has developed a Partner Program to smooth any migration. The Programme promises access to a wide range of benefits, including sales, marketing, and technical support.

Among the delivery partners mentioned are Aditi, ArtinSoft, ASNA, Augmentum, Aztec Software, Barry-Wehmiller International Resources, DTR Business Systems, Ness Technologies, NITI Technologies, Persistent, Sonata and Symphony. Microsoft is also promising a package of planning, development, marketing, sales, and support benefits.
