AMD is targeting the gaming market with a new dual-core version of its FX high-end processor - the Athlon 64 FX-60.

Billed by AMD as the 'ultimate' PC processor for games enthusiasts and those immersed in multimedia, the 64-bit dual-core chip (made from 233m transistors) features 128KB + 128KB of level 1 cache and 1024KB + 1024KB of level 2 cache. With two cores on one die, rather than two separate processors in one package, it uses full duplex, independent HyperTransport technology for accessing memory and I/O.

The Socket 939 processor is built using 90nm process technology and includes Enhanced Virus Protection support.

'As more and more games and applications support multi-core environments, PC enthusiasts can experience the true advantages delivered by the AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 dual-core processor,' said Bob Brewer, corporate VP of AMD's Desktop Division, Microprocessor Solutions Sector. 'Those who crave ultimate performance on 3D games and intense digital media applications can experience realistic physics and lighting, advanced artificial intelligence and amazing performance on digital media applications with the first dual-core AMD Athlon 64 FX processor.'

Evesham and Mesh are cited by AMD as being among the early adopters of the new chip, which is priced at $1,031 (based on 1,000-unit quantities) and is available immediately.

To make way for the new arrival, the FX-57 is reduced from $1,031 to $827 and the FX-55 is removed from AMD's schedule, which you can find here.
