Australian legislators call for Internet censorship 11:56AM, Thursday 8th December 2005
Australian legislators have called for all Internet content to be filtered by ISPs before it is relayed to their customers.

Sixty-two members of the ruling coalition have signed a letter calling for a restriction on pornographic, violent and other 'inappropriate' material. Internet users would have to opt in, by applying to their ISP, to receive the blocked content.

Guy Barnett, a Liberal (but not liberal) senator for Tasmania argues that the high costs and technical obstacles should not dissuade them from taking action.

'It is too easy for children to access all manner of material on the Internet, and I believe the system should default automatically in favour of protecting our children before we start considering the rights of adults,' he argues in an article for The Age.
