Sony has been forced to recall 3.5 million PS2 power adaptors after reports of potentially dangerous overheating.

The console manufacturer has recalledcertain AC Adaptor units sold with Sony's slimline model of the black PS2, after it received 40 complaints in the US over adaptors growing dangerously hot with several even melting.

consoles, which are said to have been made between August 2004 and December 2004, were sold in Europe.

Replacement adaptors will be issued and gamers have been asked to check the model number on the back of their consoles. Model numbers SCPH70002, 70003 and 70004 could be affected by the fault. People who think they may own one of the adaptors in question should go to www.ps2ac.com for further advice.

There have been only 4 reported incidents in Europe, which experts have put down to the difference in domestic voltage between Europe and the States. Sony has said it is taking global precautionary measures.

Sony is not the only company to get hot under the collar over faults, earlier this year Apple recalled 128,000 batteries when reports of faulty PowerBook and iBook batteries emerged.
