Sony hits double figures with 10mp digicam

Posted on 9 Sep 2005 at 12:34

Sony has launched its first compact digital camera to combine a 10.3mpx CMOS sensor and optical zoom lens in the same body, the Cyber-shot DSC-R1.

The Cyber-shot R1, aimed at enthusiasts, utilises an APS format-sized CMOS sensor designed by Sony, which is the first compact to incorporate the technology.

The sensor is almost 10 times larger than the CCD sensors used by competitors, which means it is likely to offer a much greater reduction in image noise and higher light sensitivity than the market standard.

Sony has sold CMOS sensors to dSLR manufacturers in the past, but has never utilised the technology for its own models. Many expect the sensor to be a huge drain upon battery life, as reported by Digital Lifestyles. However, Sony claims that battery life will last for around 500 shots.

The integration of the CMOS sensor and lens gives the capability for live image previews, which can be viewed through both a swivelling LCD monitor and EVF viewfinder, allowing users to shoot from a number of levels and angles. The Zeiss T* lens comes with only a 5X optical zoom, but covers an impressive range: 24mm to 120mm, and is fast with an F2.8-4.8 aperture.

Sony's Advanced Gradation Control System gives the camera the capability to evaluate the distribution of brightness on-screen and applies an appropriate Gamma curve - which should help make shooting in difficult conditions much easier.

The camera will be on sale from mid-November and has an estimated retail price of £699.00.
