Seventeen hurt in iBook riot 10:10AM, Wednesday 17th August 2005
Seventeen people were hurt in a 'stampede' to buy discounted iBooks in the US.

Henrico County school system in Virginia was selling 1,000 used laptops for $50, sparking what witnesses described as a 'riot' as an estimated 5,500 potential buyers were knocked to the floor, beaten with chairs and nearly getting run over. A girl's buggy was crushed in the chaos

The Associated Press reports that one woman even wet herself rather than lose her place in the queue.

'It's rather strange that we would have such a tremendous response for the purchase of a laptop computer - and laptop computers that probably have less-than-desirable attributes,' was the somewhat blase response of Paul Proto, director of general services for Henrico County. 'But I think that people tend to get caught up in the excitement of the event - it almost has an entertainment value.'

Four of the injured required hospital treatment.
