Mozilla patches its Internet suite 5:04PM, Friday 22nd July 2005
Mozilla has rolled out a security update for its eponymous Internet software suite.

Details of the changes in Mozilla 1.7.10 have yet to be given in the release notes, although it is worth noting that this release is the successor to 1.7.9 and not to be confused with 1.7.1. The updated version can be downloaded from

The update follows the pattern for the full Mozilla suite, of maintenance and security updates but no further application development. Instead the Mozilla Organisation is concentrating resources on standalone Firefox browser and Thunderbird email client as well as several other projects.

Firefox 1.1 had been scheduled for this month, but that deadline has been described as increasingly unrealistic. Instead, in a revised roadmap, lead engineer Ben Goodger has dropped 1.1 entirely and set a September target for Firefox 1.5. The renaming, while ostensibly cosmetic, may reflect the importance that Mozilla is placing on its new features, not least a facility for downloading ands installing updates within the application and a much improved extensions architecture.

A beta version is expected in August.
