Nokia on Siemens-BenQ handset deal: Two turkeys do not make an eagle 4:58PM, Wednesday 15th June 2005
BenQ's decision to take over Siemens' money-losing mobile handset business is a positive move for the global handset industry as well as for Nokia, but the outlook is not so positive for the companies involved, according to Anssi Vanjoki, executive vice president and general manager of Multimedia at Nokia.

The integration of the handset units of the two companies is equivalent to one big problem meeting another, Vanjoki commented on the Siemens-BenQ deal, while answering questions fielded by reporters on the sidelines of Nokia Connection 2005 (June 13-15).

The effect of the merger deal should be limited because 'two turkeys together won't make an eagle', Vanjoki asserted.

When asked to comment, BenQ chairman KY Lee, the man behind the acquisition plan, declined to discuss Vanjoki's remarks, the Chinese-language Commercial Times reported today. However, BenQ's CFO Eric Yu said, as quoted by the paper, that the key to the success of the merger deal lies in the company's ability to 'execute'.
