Intel launches new version 9.0 C++ and Fortran development tools

Posted on 15 Jun 2005 at 11:53

In order to kick start the application base for the upcoming generation of multicore processors, Intel is introducing new tools for software developers. The Intel Compilers version 9.0 for C++ and Fortran have been tuned for multithreaded applications and are said to offer security protection for both the Linux and Windows operating systems by preventing buffer overflows.

Among the new features for the compilers are binaries optimised for multi-core processors, which include an auto-parallelisation option that automatically looks for ways in the source code to take advantage of multiple execution threads. Intel says this function fully supports the OpenMP 2.5 format, which sets standards for multiprocessor code.

'As demand increases for multi-core platforms, there is an opportunity for software vendors to add performance, features and innovations to their products concurrent with this major architecture shift,' commented Intel's general manager of the Software Products Division, Bill Savage. 'The compilers version 9.0 enable C++ and Fortran developers to accelerate the development of their applications for multi-core and threaded environments.'

Intel says that Version 9.0 of the Intel C++ Compiler is available now, starting at $399 for either Windows or Linux versions. Version 9.0 of the Intel FORTRAN Compiler is available now starting at $499 for Windows or Linux versions. The compilers are available via download and on CDs directly from Intel and through resellers worldwide. You can buy the compilers by following the link to the Intel software web site.
