Going Dutch means paying a download levy 2:28PM, Thursday 28th April 2005
Dutch legislators are considering a levy on portable music players to compensate record labels for illegal downloading. The tax could add over £100 to the price of a top-level iPod.

The levy looks likely to become law later this year, when The Netherlands will join Germany, which has a similar tax on hard drives.

The Dutch government will charge up to 3.28 euros (£2.23) per gigabyte, which will add over 20 per cent to the cost of a 20GB iPod.

Opponents note that people who only legally obtained music on their players will effectively end up paying twice for the right to play copyrighted tunes.
