The new terms are a response to the decision by the GSM Association, which represents some 800 mobile device makers and GSM network operators, to reject the original licensing fees for the Open Mobile Alliance's Digital Rights Management 1.0.
The GSMA described the terms as 'impractical, excessive and short-sighted'.
MPEG LA said that the new terms were made possible by the co-operation of the wireless industry.
'Their input has enabled us to appreciate relevant market conditions and adjust the licence to meet them,' MPEG LA chief executive officer Baryn S Futa said. 'The terms announced today strike a balance between users' interest in reasonable access to this opportunity-enabling technology and patent holders' interest in a reasonable return on their research and development investments.'
He added that, 'The real beneficiaries are consumers who will have available to them the myriad new products and services that OMA DRM enables.'
