Toshiba brings PCs under the control of mobile phones

Posted on 19 Jan 2005 at 12:10

Japanese giant Toshiba is staking a claim to the world's first mobile phone software that will allow the remote control of a PC.

Dubbed the Ubiquitous Viewer, the program can connect a user to any Windows-based computer and run applications, and add, edit and delete files. It also gives access to email, browser and other resources on the target PC in real time.

It sounds like a hacker's dream to have this already enabled, but Toshiba assures us that the connection is made through encrypted SSL channels which can only be initiated with the correct password.

The software will debut on Toshiba's home turf in phones equipped for CDMA networks - initially with KDDI's au service in March. But this will be expanded to other territories and operators in the future.
