MP3 Surround is a multi-channel format that enables 5.1 surround sound for broadcasting, Web-based music distribution, digital audio editing applications and consumer electronics. It supports high-quality audio at bit rates comparable to those used for standard MP3 encoding, resulting, Fraunhofer says, in files half the size of common compressed sound formats.

'We are delighted to advance MP3 into the area of multichannel audio.... As surround sound is increasingly gaining importance in the marketplace, we are confident that MP3 Surround will attract the attention of music production professionals and consumers alike, said Jrgen Herre, chief executive scientist at Fraunhofer IIS.
The technology is currently available for evaluation and interested parties can download a Windows 2000/XP test encoder and player from www.mp3surround-format.com; a Mac OS X version will be released on 15 December. The evaluation encoder enables the creation of MP3 Surround material out of five or six channel .wav files.
Fraunhofer IIS developed MP3 Surround in conjunction with its MP3-licensing partner Thomson and Agere Systems.
