Arm puts the Swerve in 3D mobile gaming

UK processor design company Arm is boosting 3D gameplay on mobile phones.
The company has announced that Sinjisoft has licensed Swerve Client technology - jointly developed by ARM and Superscape - for use in its GNEX software (a popular gaming system in Korea). Swerve Client will provide the 3D graphics engine to enable colour 3D gaming on handsets.
The handsets will first appear in Korea, which is the leading market for advanced mobile gaming: 'The Swerve Client software offers Sinjisoft a solution with optimum power and performance to enable high-quality 3D gameplay,' said Lance Howarth, director of Embedded Software at Arm. 'The Swerve technology is key for downloaded games and other applications for mobile handsets distributed in the dynamic Korean wireless market.'
Described by Arm as the world's first publicly demonstrated JSR (Java Specification Request) 184 3D applications platform for wireless devices, the Swerve Client software is designed to deliver 'console quality' interactive 3D Java and BREW applications. It manages interactive 3D scenes using model description data, which can be optimised for small download sizes and to save memory - ideal for wireless applications.
'Swerve powered handsets deliver the highest quality 3D games and experiences to consumers,' added Choong Yeob Choi, CEO, Sinjisoft. 'With the Korean market demanding advanced interactive media capabilities, it is increasingly important for mobile handset vendors to offer competitive differentiators such as 3D gaming.'
