Acer has lined up a new Ferrari laptop on the starting grid - the Ferrari 3400.
This new version of Acer's premium notebook is based on the new AMD 64-bit, low-power processor the - the 3000+ Mobile Athlon 64 processor (see AMD tops out low-power mobile 64-bit chip range).
As well as support for 802.11a/b/g flavours of wireless networking, the chip was AMD's first new processor model manufactured to a 90 nanometer production process, which should help increase the performance in a chip without requiring increased power. It also enables NX ('no execute') buffer-overflow protection when used in conjunction with Windows XP SP 2.
Within the grey and 'Ferrari red' chassis there is also a 15in TFT display, an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 for graphics (with 128MB dedicated video RAM), 512MB of RAM (scaleable to 2048MB) and an 80GB hard drive. A slot-loading DVD-Super Multi drive (a reader/burner) is also standard. Other elements of the notebook's spec include 4 USB 2.0 ports, an S-Video out port, a FireWire IEEE 1394 interface and a 4-in-1 memory card reader.
Pricing for the Ferrari 3400 starts from £1,259.
