Florida hurricanes flatten email spam operations 11:13AM, Friday 8th October 2004
It's an ill wind that blows nobody any good. The recent hurricanes which battered Florida in September resulted in a marked drop in the amount of spam sent out according to email security specialist FrontBridge Technologies.

Florida has long been seen as a centre for the spammers. Following the assault of Hurricanes Frances, Ivan and Jeanne, the company noticed a marked drop in the amount of spam transmitted around the world.

Each month, the company monitors some 100 million messages from more than 2,500 companies. When Hurricane Frances hit, the amount of spam volumes fell from 89 per cent of total messages to below 82 per cent. After Hurricane Ivan, the level of spam fell from 91 per cent to below 84 per cent, and following Hurricane Jeanne spam messages dropped six per cent to 83 per cent.

The company points out that because they work on tiny response levels for the number of emails they send, the hurricanes will have hit their bottom lines. However, the spammers are productive fellows. Frontbridge ruefully notes that despite the storms, spam levels still hit a record high over the entire month.
