Intel CEO Barrett to retire next May

Posted on 28 Sep 2004 at 09:41

Craig Barrett, CEO of Intel is to retire next May. He recently had his 65th birthday last month, the firm's mandatory retirement age for the office of CEO.

Barrett joined Intel in 1974 and became a vice president in 1984, senior vice president in 1987, executive vice president in 1990 and chief operating officer in 1993. He became Intel's president in 1997 and CEO in 1998.

Taking the reins in the late 1990s meant that Craig Barrett had to steer Intel through the worst recession the tech sector had seen in decades. He has also had to face up to increasing competition from AMD which has grown over the years from being a minor irritant to a serious competitor. This year has also seen a series of mishaps which has taken the shine off the Intel image.

He has a wife, two children and four grandchildren.
