'It's good to hear Microsoft is on board, but we still need to get Apple to think of a better name,' joked Otellini.
For the wider picture and the growth prospects for the IT industry he was, as you would expect, bullish about the future. Despite last week's profit warning by Intel, he insisted that both the growth of the Internet and telephonic data traffic were conforming to their own versions of Moore's law. Revenue would follow the flow of bits, he insisted, with network profitability inevitably following.
Another source of inspiration, he claimed, were the 'next 3 billion users' which are emerging from developing countries and helping to expanding existing markets. Asian countries in general, and China in particular, were highlighted as significant players of the future. Their needs and use of technology, he stressed, would differ from those of the west, a fact that western technology companies would have to recognise and anticipate.
