Nvidia extends GeForce 6 series

Posted on 12 Aug 2004 at 16:16

Nvidia has further extended its GeForce 6 Series of graphics processing units (GPUs). New to the series are the mid-range 6600 and 6600 GT.

Dubbed by Nvidia as 'a gamer's dream for DOOM 3' the GeForce 6600 graphics processing units are designed to take 'complex scenes with multiple light sources' in their stride. More specifically, there is support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 Shader Model 3.0, an on-chip video processor and compatibility with PCI Express for 4GB/sec (upstream and downstream) data transfers.

Both GPUs have an eight pipe superscalar design and support 128MB of GDDR3 graphics memory, but the 6600 GT also supports Nvidia's SLI multi-GPU technology for combining multiple GPUs in a single system.

'The cost of bleeding-edge graphics technology [the GeForce 6 architecture] just got cut in half for gamers,' said Dan Vivoli, Nvidia's, executive VP of marketing. 'DOOM 3, the most anticipated game of the year, and the mind blowing price/performance ratio of GeForce 6600 GPUs - that is what gamers' dreams are made of.'

You can find more info on the 6600 and 6600 GT on the Nvidia website.

The new GPUs will be appearing in cards from the likes of Asus, Gainward, Gigabyte, Leadtek and PNY from late September onwards. The 6600 GT GPU costs $199, but no price has yet been attached to the 6600.
