Allied Irish Bank opts for Sun desktop

Posted on 30 Jun 2004 at 10:13

Allied Irish Bank has signed up to use Sun Microsystem's Linux-based Java Desktop System (JDS) across 7,500 seats.

The deal marks the largest customer win for Sun's desktop - in this case for the news JDS 2 system which offers centralised management controls. Sun will also provide consulting, support and education services alongside the desktops.

'The global momentum for the Java Desktop System continues at a rapid pace because of its affordability, enhanced security and manageability, and interoperability,' said Curtis Sasaki, vice president, Desktop Solutions at Sun. 'We are very pleased to have AIB as a client of Sun and see growing demand in the financial, education and government markets.'

The upgrade will move AIB's staff off Windows and onto JDS beginning next year.

AIB operates in Ireland and throughout the UK.
