Intel ready for run in with China over wireless requirements 1:13PM, Monday 5th April 2004
Intel is approaching a face-off with Chinese authorities about the use of wireless networking in the People's Republic.

The technical heart of the issue is the use of WAPI (wireless authentication and privacy infrastructure), which is a Chinese-designed data encryption scheme, reports Reuters.

The crunch day

is 1 June, when the implementation of WAPI will be required by China. According to Reuters, only a few Chinese companies have access to the technology and this puts foreign companies such as Intel at a trading disadvantage. They would effectively have to share their chip designs with local partners.

'We haven't changed our basic position. We will sell our Centrino mobile technology up until June 1. Hopefully, we'll get the issue resolved before then,' Intel's chief executive, Craig Barrett, is reported as telling reporters in Taipei, Taiwan.

The wider issue, of course, involves privacy and surveillance. The reason the Chinese authorities are standing firm is that the Chinese government will be able to decrypt any communications over wireless networks, whether they be in Internet cafes, airports or home networks.
