Mobile phones to hit 2 billion total by 2008 11:38AM, Monday 9th February 2004
The worldwide number of mobile phone users is set to hit 2 billion by 2008, reports the Baskerville research company. This means another 800 million new customers, most of whom will be in China and India according to the Baskerville Global Mobile Forecasts to 2010 report.

To be precise, sixty per cent of the growth will be in the Asia Pacific market. Elsewhere, the Middle East and African markets will double in size, albeit from a very much smaller base and rack up 100 million new mobile users by 2010.

However, its not just third world economies which are going to show big growth. The report says that the relatively underdeveloped US mobile market is also expected to grow quickly in the next two years with another 66 million subscribers before the end of 2006.

The much anticipated 3G services will also drive growth. The survey concludes that by the end of 2007, the number of 3G subscribers will hit 250 million worldwide and almost doubling again to nearly half a billion by 2010.
