Mobile phone porn blocked by operators

Posted on 20 Jan 2004 at 17:07

UK network operators have announced a code for minor mobile users.

The six UK operators have agreed to put in place controls that restrict access to adult content available via mobile phones for those under 18.

MP Stephen Timms, Communications Minister, said: 'This Code of Practice is an excellent example of the responsible self regulation we are keen to encourage among the mobile operators to address issues relating to new types of content now available on mobile handsets. We believe this approach best meets the needs and expectations of consumers.

'New technology introduces significant benefits and opportunities, but it can also bring new concerns and we must ensure that safeguards are in place to protect those vulnerable, such as children.'

Orange, O2, T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile, Vodafone and currently the only 3G operator in the UK, 3, have moved in response to the more sophisticated features of modern phones, such as email, web browsing and colour screens and cameras.

They say they have agreed a code of practice that will result in a classification system for content similar to that found in film, for example, and there will be plenty of educational material for parents to be able to set phones to filter out 18-rated content.

Unmoderated chat rooms will only be available to over 18s. The operators say that they will introduce a series of checks to verify whether the user is over 18 or not.

Additionally, the companies will introduce technology to combat spam, unsolicited SMS, and nuisance messages. However, premium rate lines and text services will not be covered by the code as they already fall under the ICSTIS Code of Practice.

Finally, reports of possibly illegal content will be brought to the attention of law enforcement agencies.

The Code of Practice is available in PDF.
