New Intel compiler support for Prescott

Posted on 10 Dec 2003 at 10:15

Intel Corporation has released its next generation of C++ and Fortran compilers for its whole range of processors. The company claims that it provides a single environment for development for Itanium, Xeon, Pentium and Intel Personal Internet Client Architecture for mobile phones and PDAs.

The compilers support the soon-to-be-released `Prescott` processor which are said to enhance graphics and other processor-intensive applications. Hyper-Threading and the OpenMP 2.0 standards for using high level instructions are also catered for.

According to Intel, the compilers will also enhance Mobile MMX technology and boost graphical, audio and video performance on mobile phones and PDAs as well as provide a set of common tools for building new wireless network-based applications.

Version 8.0 of the compilers include Intel C++ and Fortran Compilers for Windows and Linux as well as Intel C++ Compilers for Windows CE .NET. For the Intel Visual Fortran Compiler for Windows, the company has borrowed features from Compaq Visual Fortran(CVF) which, the company claims, will make it easier for developers to migrate code from CVF to Linux and Itanium based systems.

The compilers are available now and prices range new from $399 to $1,499. Find out more at the Intel web site.

Each compiler offers one year of upgrades and support provided directly from Intel.
