Sun to preview easy-to-use Java

At its SunNetwork 2003 Conference in Berlin, Sun has announced a technology preview release of Sun Java Studio Creator. Formerly code-named Project Rave, this is claimed to be an easy-to-use environment for Java development.

With the drag-and-drop creation of user interfaces, the use of components, and simplified access to databases, Java Studio Creator is intended to speed the creation of corporate apps - think of a Java equivalent of VBA.

It uses an event-based coding model based on the JavaServer Faces (used for building UIs for JavaServer applications) and is compatible with standard Java (J2SE and J2EE). It also features the bells and whistles of a modern IDE - such as synchronised editing views, property sheets and wizards. Sun will be gathering feedback from this preview release (you have to register to express interest, with the release being available before the end of the year).

Readers may remember that Sun held a competition to guess the release name of what has been codenamed Project Rave. Whoever would have thought of Java Studio Creator? In actual fact, Sun also refers to it as Rave 1.0 on its Website.

You can find more information on the software, whatever it is finally called, at www.sun.com/jscreator.
