Oracle announces new entry-level database

Oracle has announced the Oracle Standard Edition Database, an entry-level database aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises. It is a single processor version of its Standard Edition Database.

'Oracle Standard Edition One provides smaller organisations and our partner community with a world-class database at an attractive price,' explains Jacqueline Woods, Oracle VP of Global Practices, Global Pricing and Licensing Strategy.

At a cost of £3,655 it is still more expensive than MySQL or even Access, which are some of the competing entry-level offerings. But with Named User Plus licensing, at £119 ($195) per user with a minimum of five users, Oracle's sales line is that you can now get the 'world's most popular database software for under $1,000 in license fees'.

You can find more information on the new version on the Oracle website.
