Intel revs up new Xeon

Intel has updated its 32-bit server processor range, the Xeon.

The new dual-processor Xeons run at 3.20 GHz, with a 533 MHz system bus and 1 MB of cache. They are targeted at general-purpose servers, such as Web hosting and streaming media, and for workstations involved in intensive 3D modelling and digital content creation.

The 1 MB of cache for Xeons was introduced back in July, with a 3.06 GHz model. A Xeon of this speed was already available, but with 512KB of L3 cache. Intel claims that doubling the amount of the Xeon's cache gives a performance improvement of 15 per cent. Now, a faster clock speed is available.

Intel is expecting OEMs to ship systems based on the new processor this week. It has drop-in compatibility with existing Xeon-based platforms, and is priced at $851 (based on direct sale of 1,000 unit quantities).

You can find more info on Xeons on the Intel website. Not to be confused with Intel's 64-bit server processor, the Itanium 2, which is aimed at more heavy-duty server systems.
