Wireless speeds doubled with Super G technology

A manufacturer of wireless communications chipsets has developed a new technology that purports to double the speed of 802.11g-based networks.

Super G and Super A/G from Atheros Communications provide a raw date rate of 108Mbit/sec, although this drops to 90Mbps for TCP/IP throughput. Nonetheless, with the standard 802.11g raw data rate of 54Mbps providing around 20Mbps for TCP/IP communications, this is a significant speed hike.

Netgear has just announced its first Super G based products for the UK. The WGT624 108Mbps Wireless Firewall Router and the WG511T 108Mbps Wireless PC Card, although to get the extra speed you have to use both products together.

In addition a wireless hub, the router includes a four-port 10/100 Ethernet switch, protected by more than ten security features including a double firewall (NAT and SPI). WEP encryption and Wi-Fi Protected Access. It will be available in October for £124 (ex. VAT). The PC card will be available at the same time for £66 (ex. VAT).

Both products are compatible with both standard 802.11g and 802.11b devices.
