IDF 2003 Fall: Nvidia takes the Express

Nvidia says it is developing a new generation of graphics processors which aims to take advantage of the new PCI Express standard. The announcement was made at the Intel Developers Conference in San Jose.

The company says that it is looking to produce silicon for the complete range of PCs from notebooks to desktops to workstations and will be launched alongside Intel's own release of product.

This announcement is actually no surprise. It has been clear for some time that when PCI Express is launched next year, it will overtake the AGP (advanced graphics processor) standard that has been the basis of graphics development for the past few years. PCI Express can deliver data at up to 4Gb per second and deliver that bandwidth to the devices that need it the most. What Nvidia doesn't say of course is that to take advantage of its new family, you'll need to buy a new mobo at the very least.
