Fujitsu has announced two new 22-inch TFT LCD displays, one aimed at PC multimedia work and the other at the television market.
The PC multimedia version, the FLC56XWC8V (pictured), is an XGA (Extended VGA) display with a resolution of 1,280x768 and a pixel pitch of 0.375mm. The television version, the FLC56UWC8V, is a HDTV+ (High Definition TV+), with a resolution of 1,920x1,200 and a pixel pitch of 0.247mm.
In terms of viewing angles, the displays support 170 degrees in the horizontal and vertical directions and 160 in any direction. The contrast ratio is 600:1, the brightness of 500cd/m2, and there's a palette of 16.7 million colours. Fujitus points out that an effective 22-inch diagonal screen size is the equivalent to a 25-inch CRT.
The displays have a response time of 25ms and incorporate twelve replaceable backlight CCFLs (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps) with a life expectancy of 50,000 hours.
UK pricing has not been confirmed.
The feature that Fujitsu is highlighting for the displays is its MVA (Multi-domain Vertical Alignment) technology. This involves liquid crystal molecules being angled in more than one direction within a single cell. This helps improve, Fujitsu claims, contrast ratios and overall viewing angles.
This effect is apparently achieved by the division of each cell into two or more regions, called domains, and by using protrusions on the glass surfaces to pre-tilt the molecules in the desired direction. Fujitsu claims that by combining very small areas of molecules orientated in two directions, one opposite the other, the brightness of the cells appears uniformly over a wide range of viewing angles. It should also mean that the panels are free from grey scale inversion and colour distortion.
