Dell rolls out managed desktop services in UK

Dell has launched a Managed Services offering in the UK. It will provide, it has announced, 'a complete managed lifecycle services solution' for computing infrastructures, for both Dell and multi-vendor based systems.

The idea - as with all such outsourcing services - is to provide clients with a single point of accountability for hardware and software requirements.

Dell Managed Services cover four areas: 'Lifecycle Assessment' (cost analysis of managing desktop environments), 'Asset Discovery' (inventories of infrastructure), 'Managed Deployment' (the implementation, and transition to, new systems) and 'Managed Client Services' (end-to-end support across system lifecycles).

The move is another example of Dell being keen to be seen as a more than a PC box builder, as evidenced by its recent change of name to simply Dell Inc. According to the Dell board, the change represented Dell's evolution 'from strictly a computer hardware company to a diverse supplier of technology products and services'.

It will also be important for providing another revenue stream for Dell, a company used to outperforming a depressed market - Dell reports record results, again. Companies such as IBM and HP have long relied on such services for boosting corporate revenue.

'Our customers have asked for better quality, cost-effective and reliable lifecycle services from a single supplier, and a partner they can trust,' states Josh Claman, VP of Services, Dell EMEA.

'They are looking to gain more control over their IT infrastructure through a services solution that can integrate with their IT strategy and environment, whilst delivering lower operating costs back to the business.'

Dell already provides Managed Services to users in the US. 'This experience, coupled with our strong partner network, enables us to provide our customers with unrivalled support,' claims Claman.
