Dell reports record results, again

Dell has reported record results for the last three months and year-on-year sales growth of 27 per cent.

With the computer market growing at around a quarter of that, Dell's has increased its leading share of the market by around three per cent to 18 per cent.

Increased market share meant increased income for the only Windows-based PC maker currently making a profit. The company made a net income of $621mn, a rise of almost 24 per cent on the same quarter in 2002, on revenues up 16 per cent to $9,778bn.

'We've again shown Dell's unique ability to profitably earn a larger share of business by focusing on standards-based technologies, managing costs and creating value for customers,' said Kevin B. Rollins, Dell's president and chief operating officer. 'We've done that regardless of the pace of industry demand and the appetite of others to generate sales, even at a loss.'

Rollins added that he expects growth to continue at around 25 per cent, while industry-wide it will remain in single figures.

The company's best performance was in Asia, where growth was 46 per cent, and particularly in China, where growth exceeded 65 per cent for the third consecutive quarter and notebook sales doubled.
