AMD unveils an Opteron fit for a supercomputer

Posted on 5 Aug 2003 at 11:42

As expected AMD has filled out its Opteron processor line with a new addition.

Last week, AMD shuffled its processor pricing - AMD cuts prices for mobile computing - and the Opteron range was affected. It was being prepared for a new arrival in the 200 series: the Model 246, which is priced at $794, based on 1,000-unit quantities.

Opterons are AMD's 64-bit server and workstation processors, and the 200 series support dual-processor systems.

Expect to see the 246 running in the IBM eServer 325 platform, which - incidentally - will also be powering one of the world's largest Linux supercomputers at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Japan. The 1,058 IBM eServer 325 systems that make up the system will use 2116 Opterons to crunch through 11Tflops/sec.
