Viva open source Java

Viva, a new website dedicated to open source Java, has been made live.

Currently the site includes a directory listing of open source Java runtimes, compilers, libraries, test suites, FAQs, UI toolkits and such like.

There will also be links to Java runtimes from the research community, information about open source basics and Sun's official open source PR.

It is intended to be a one-stop shop for those interested in Java, the platform-neutral programming language - created by Sun - that is designed to simplify programming for networks, including the Internet.

Interestingly, Viva is also intended to serve as 'a call to action' to put pressure on Sun to release the Java core as open source. It is running a Free Java Now campaign, to 'help secure the future of Java as an open royalty-free standard'.

You can find the website at viva.sourceforge.net

The site is featured on Java.Net in the Java Today 'community newsletter', the technical content for which is produced by O'Reilly.

'In addition to daily Java news that is collected by O'Reilly editors or submitted by the Java community, the site highlights the work of its members, and provide profiles of interesting projects and people,' said Tim O'Reilly in a recent interview with PC Pro.
